Lab: Using OSGeo and QGIS

This is a two-part lab. In the first part, you'll install OSGeo and learn the basics of manging the suite. In the second-part you'll learn to use QGIS to create maps.

Learning Outcomes

Walk-throughs

Walk through the web pages below to get the OSGeo system up and running. We recommend doing this on a portable computer that you can take with you to lab and work on at home. The next best alternative is a USB 3.0 flash drive.

Warning: You can install the components of the OSGeo suite that we'll be using on a personal computer without the virtual machine but this means you system will be different from all the others in class and you may have different issues that are harder for the class to help you resolve.

Homework Assignment

Use QGIS to create maps of your data for your project. Incorporate these into a short report on your progress so far on your project. Include a locator map and feel free to use this as the start of your project (i.e. include an introduction, methods, and results of data collection). This will also fullfil the project assignment of "Data Collection Results" for next week.
